Student Unions and How They Can Affect Academic Performance

Student unions are a distinct part of student culture and they normally assist individuals in making their experiences worthwhile. However, what participants may not know is that the unions can actually generate positive results during participation in College itself.

The positive impact

1. Leads to better academics. If one takes part in student union committees or is active in leadership then such a person is likely to be more interested in forging a better future for himself/ herself. These students are aware of the impact their time in College will have in their lives so they are likely to make as much use of it as they possibly can.

2. Promotes self confidence and autonomy. Student unions frequently assign certain roles to respective members. For instance some members may be treasurers; others may be student union secretaries and many others. As members are given various roles, they begin gaining confidence in executing their assigned attacks and this creates a high level of autonomy amongst them.

3. It attaches one to their respective institution. A student who is involved in his or her student union is likely to be in touch with the goings on within his/her institution. Such a person feels a sense of community towards his learning environment and his fellow students. Normally, members of student unions will be required to meet up and discuss issues pertaining to their institutions. This allows them to get to know one another well and also to become comfortable around other members of the institutions. Social integration of individuals in campus is often possible when groups interact and work together with people who have common interests.
